I was born in Chicago, IL in the US and I'm a native English speaker. My educational background is in music! I play the cello and taught music lessons for many years. A few years ago I started studying Japanese as a hobby and now I'm living in Japan! I find that I have been able to use a lot of the methods I used to study music in studying languages.
Some of my other hobbies include running, listening to music, hanging out with friends, watching tv shows on Netflix, and eating! I love trying different world cuisines, so I love talking about food too!
Me as a Teacher
I currently live in Nagoya, Japan, and teach English at schools. Before I moved here I also worked with a non-profit organization tutoring small groups of students who immigrated to the US at my local library and community center. I'm fascinated by other cultures and want to learn more about the big wide world out there.
My teaching philosophy has always been to approach each student as an individual and make a plan together on how best to improve based on his or her strengths and weaknesses.
My lessons & teaching style
Helping other people reach there English goals is important to me because I know how hard it is to study a foreign language. As a teacher, I like to approach each student as an individual, find out their level and goals and try to make a plan that will work for them from there.
My favorite way to help is by trying to find a way to stay motivated to learn a language. Staying motivated is a huge problem when learning a language (I know firsthand!). Sometimes just having daily conversation is enough to motivate others, other times having a huge career goal is more motivating. Figuring this out is one of the most important things before we start lessons.
