Despite Thatcher's and Reagan's acknowledged limited knowledge of economics, the spirit of Mont Pelerin significantly shaped Western economic development in the 1980s. In the book "How States Thin," Mearsheimer points out: "Practical men are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Madmen in authority are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back." He also notes that "Richard Nixon was not versed in economics, but his basic frame of reference was Keynesian. He believed the government faced a choice between inflation and unemployment. By contrast, Ronald Reagan was so influenced by Friedman’s monetarist theories’". This raises a question: How deep should a president's understanding of economic issues be?
