About Me
italki teacher since Sep 17, 2017
Hi, everyone! My name is Chris. I am an American and I'm 57 years old. I live in the United States in the state of North Carolina, which is in the southeast part of the country. I previously lived in Europe for 18 years. I have been married for 35 years. I have 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren. I have many hobbies like collecting, repairing and using fountain pens; playing tennis and volleyball; repairing electronic devices like laptops, tablets and mobile phones and raising tropical fish in naturally planted aquariums. In my free time, I also like growing bonsai trees and exotic tropical plants like orchids, African violets, tillandsias and carnivorous plants like Venus Fly Traps.
Me as a Teacher
I've lived and/or worked in Europe (Budapest, Hungary) for most of the last 22 years. Working with a non-profit US organization, I've helped organize and teach summer intensive and year-round follow-up English courses in Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Bosnia. I've also provided personal tutoring to dozens of English learners over the years both in person and using Skype.
I have a Master's Degree with classroom teaching experiences ranging from Elementary school to College. I've also received TEFL/TESOL certification from Teflen Training College. I've tutored English students of all ages (children to adults) privately and online. I'm passionate that learning should not be boring.
My lessons & teaching style
Unless the student specifically requests something different, the primary emphasis of my lessons is speaking practice and conversational listening comprehension. This makes up 40-45 minutes of each 60 minute lesson. The topics for these conversation exercises is a balanced mixture of formal business subjects and practical everyday English speaking tasks. (Of course, the student can request a certain topic at any time.)
The secondary emphasis of my lessons is reading comprehension and pronunciation practice. This usually involves 15-20 minutes of each 60 minute lesson. Both written and audio versions of short texts and articles are used for these exercises.

Teacher’s pick
Chris is an amazing teacher. I've talked to 100+ teachers/tutors since I started learning English 4 years ago but he is one of the most dedicated teachers to teach language. He is very supportive and well-prepared. And his lesson is constructed.
