About Me

I'm James, I come from Nottingham and live in Cologne (Köln). The world is a complex, challenging and fascinating place. I've been learning languages for several years and have ended up moving to a different country, you never know where our lessons will take you! I think it is a great thing to do: the interesting details (like new words), the challenge of trying to speak it, and the new worlds you discover as you learn (music, films, people, politics). I have many interests: reading and learning is a big one, comedy writing, making music and other creative activities (I have a soft spot for football too!) and learning languages of course. One day I hope to learn them all!
After learning German for a few years and helping two friends with some basic German (I don't speak German well enough to offer lessons here however, I am sorry!), I realised language teaching is something I enjoyed doing. I got a TEFL qualification, taught at a refugee organisation, before joining Italki where i've given over 2000 lessons. I have met students at all levels for a wide variety of purposes: as a hobby, moving to a new country, preparing for an exam etc. I love my job as a language teacher. It is so varied and pleasurable meeting people from all over the world. It's always rewarding to work with students over many months/years and seeing you progress in your language journeys.

Ich habe das 10-Stunden Paket bei James gebucht und hatte jetzt meine letzte Stunde. James war immer sehr freundlich, ist auf meine Wünsche und Fragen eingegangen und hat immer aktuelles Material für das jeweilige Thema zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Stunden waren für mich sehr hilfreich und ich kann James auf jeden Fall bestens empfehlen.

This conversational lesson was great! It was nice to have a spontaneous conversation, answer his questions and then ask him questions about the UK that I'd like to know. It was nice to meet him. Big thanks to James for the opportunity to practice with a native English speaker and I hope to see him again soon!
