I’m a seasoned, interdisciplinary educator, applied anthropologist, language instructor, evaluator, and artist with over 40 years of professional, international experience. In addition to nearly 10 years of ESL teaching experience at multiple levels, I have 12 additional years of teaching experience in applied anthropology, Spanish, special education, and art. Before getting married in 1993, I was an ordained monk for nearly 8 years . Throughout the years I have studied, taught, and created art. TESOL since 1981. Anthropology (Ph.D.); Int'l & Comp. Ed. (M.Ed.); Theology (M.Div.); & Spanish (BA) As a teacher I’m guided by a line from Don Quijote, “Cada uno es hijo de sus obras.” (“We are all the children of our accomplishments.”) and an anthropological observation that “education is identity change.” Learning is more than the acquisition of new skills, it’s the emergence of a new identity. I first saw it in my dissertation research, and then I began to see it everywhere. Learning anything new, especially another language, means becoming someone new. These insights continually challenge me to offer relevant instructional opportunities that allow learners to experience themselves engaging in new practices that they can then convert into newer versions of themselves.
