Hey everyone, My name is Edgardo Salgado I am from Barranquilla, Colombia and I am a Spanish and English teacher now living in New York City. I grew up in Colombia but I had the opportunity to learn English since I was in preschool which makes my English level near-native. I have used this to my advantage teaching Spanish and English (see "Me as a Teacher section). I enjoy learning/reading about linguistics, philosophy and science. I also enjoy and work with art, mostly as a freelance Illustrator. In my freetime I enjoy doing all the things above but also enjoy sports like soccer or skating. I consider myself to be empathetic, friendly and easy-going. And I bring this into my teaching.
Me as a Teacher
As mentioned, I believe having a native grasp in both English and Spanish is an advantage. It allows me to easily translate idiomatic concepts and expressions that don’t have literal equivalent from one language to the other. I can draw meaning from my native understanding of both languages (and my experience in using both in daily life) to find the right examples and the closest translations from the source to the target language. I studied linguistics and, even though it is generally not required for a language teacher to be trained in linguistics, there is a growing number of experts in the community who believe it's a huge plus. I've drawn countless knowledge from it to teach.
My lessons & teaching style
My lessons are student-centered. Meaning I don't enter a lesson already having a set program but an outline instead. I make a careful assessment of three elemental things: understanding, structure (all the grammar: tense knowledge, word order (syntax), vocabulary (semantics)(also present in understanding)) and last but not least pronunciation. Reading and writing are usually less important (unless the student has a specific goal) because they aren't the immediate and natural way of communication and they're by far the easiest for learners. These are taught not only to students but to native speakers as well. I design a progression based on current level and goals. Coursework is varied.

Because Edgardo is native to both Columbia and the United States, he has tremendous insight into the intricacies between the two languages and teaches them well.

Ed siempre está paciente conmigo y hablamos de muchos temas interesantes. Hoy tuve problemas con el audio pero Ed me dio una hora aunque el asunto me retrasó casi media hora. Gracias Ed por ser tan amistoso y simpático.
