About Me
italki teacher since Dec 4, 2019
I am Nigerian and British. I grew up speaking Igbo and loving our culture and worried that if major investments are not made to keep the Culture alive then it will become extinct. I currently live in London and can see the struggle of parents to achieve teaching their children the language. I started to teach out of passion. My first student is my daughter and we use the walk to school time to revise the language. She is getting confident to teach her friends and teachers any new word she learns.
I have worked at various levels in the private and public sector but now focused on building a platform that promotes the African culture. My first task is to focus on my native language Igbo.
Me as a Teacher
I have taught in a secondary school; I am a seasoned trainer. I speak the language, willing to learn more, motivated and passionate. I am enjoying the impact and feedback from my students and parents. I am internally motivated, resilient and driven. I make my class fun, interactive, relaxed creating a home setting so students are comfortable to make mistakes and correct them. I use stories to paint pictures of our culture. I also invite student to share experiences and this forms conversations for all to join in. I am flexible and vary teaching to suit the learner. I take student starting from 5years old. My class size is growing and my students have voted me the best teacher.
My lessons & teaching style
My first session starts with a welcome greeting then a detailed introduction of myself and what motivates me and my decision to teach Igbo language and culture. I then paint the Igbo journey. I note why the student decided to join my class. I then assess understanding of the language to better meet need. I use the modern foreign language curriculum as guide. I use flash cards, videos, translate major poems, rhymes into Igbo as part of teaching. Each module focuses on daily tasks one is exposed to when in a typical Igbo land. I provide a survival kit/guide so they are confident to negotiate in those settings in a culturally acceptable way. I listen to the needs of the student and adapt
