Hi there! I'm Malcolm. I come from Nova Scotia, on the east coast of Canada, and now I live in Montreal. I grew up speaking both English and French at home: my father is Belgian, my mother is (anglophone) Canadian. I've always loved languages, and I'm learning Dutch and Italian myself. Among my hobbies are reading, writing, playing music, hiking, and cooking.
I have an Honours degree in Classics, for which I studied Latin and Ancient Greek, plus ancient and medieval philosophy. I studied quite a bit of modern philosophy too. I've also worked as a student translator from Latin to English.
Me as a Teacher
If you've got some basics of the language down and you want to start speaking more comfortably, I'm your guy. I'm also happy to take on advanced students who would like to fine-tune their English or French. I offer both conversation- and reading-based classes that can be tailored to suit your needs and preferences.
I've taught tons of people from all walks of life: artists, engineers, mechanics, programmers, soldiers, actors, dancers, doctors, professors, diplomats, cooks, athletes, and more.
Please note: I don't accept bookings made for children by parents/guardians. However, if you're 12-17 and you're booking a lesson for yourself, then that's alright.
My lessons & teaching style
I offer three types of lesson:
-Conversation time: discussion in French or English with corrections and feedback. Please let me know in advance if you'd like to focus on a particular theme or have set materials to discuss. We can talk about all kinds of things (work, hobbies, food, news, music, culture, history, philosophy, and much more), and/or use various media (articles, videos, podcasts, etc.).
-Reading in French/English: I read all kinds of things - novels, articles, philosophy, poetry, great authors, etc. You choose the texts that we'll read, analyze, and even translate if you want.
-Proofreading: I read through and correct something you've written. See lesson description for more.

I took several French classes with Malcolm during my preparation for the TCF Canada exam.
He helped me develop my speaking skills and gain confidence to speak about a diverse set of topics. Every class was different and tailored to my needs. Thanks to him, I was able to get a B2 at the TCF Canada and now he’s helping me prepare for job interviews.
Look no further and book a class with him!

I've been able to improve my French a lot after several lessons with Malcolm, especially my speaking skills. Malcolm always makes me feel very comfortable to speak and to make mistakes - which makes me feel more confident to express myself elsewhere. I am really grateful for having him as a teacher.

J’ai une bonne première leçon avec Malcom. Il est très gentil. Si j’ai oublié le mot en français, il m’a dit le mot et il a écrit le mot pour moi dans le chat. Ça était une très bonne conversation avec lui. Je le recommande.
Merci beaucoup, Malcom!

Malcom seems like a very diligent and nice person, his attitude and behavior was out of my comprehension.
Focus and acceptance with others easily seems like his style.
He is highly recommended in my books, will give more reviews like this going on after sessions.
Thank you Malcolm.👍
