Tycoon

I've been going down on my 10 lesson package of news article based lessons with Tycoon more quickly than expected. Although I may be punching above my weight a little bit, I like learning languages organically anyway and these news articles give me a chance to be exposed to all sorts of new vocabulary and expressions, while learning about what's happening in Korea. I enjoy it a lot. I'm also seeking his guidance on pronunciation and intonation in the class through oral reading, which is very helpful. I always appreciate his patience as well as his depth of knowledge and willingness to provide a little more than just a word.

It’s already been a year of learning Korean with Tycoon. He's never late to class! Our lessons mainly focus on speaking practice. We chat casually, and he gently corrects me along the way. We review past lessons, practice making sentences, and explore idioms and expressions. Whenever grammar points pop up, we take the time to go over them too. My confidence in speaking is growing, and while grammar and speaking are still challenging, I’m slowly getting the hang of it. During a stopover in Seoul, I actually got to use what I’ve learned, from asking questions at a pharmacy, ordering street food to requesting a clothing size. I made plenty of mistakes, but it still felt like a huge win. I’m excited to keep learning with Tycoon and see how far I can go. Tycoon is an amazing teacher!

Tycoon is truly an excellent teacher, mentor, and person: I'm Korean-American and have had many many teachers in the past. I have even studied Korean in Korea at Yonsei University. But Tycoon is quite exceptional. He's hard-working, precise, but offers suggestions and corrections with kindness, understanding, and compassion too. Every lesson is loaded with words, expressions, grammar points. Most of all, he listens and listens with care. For many years I had an ambivalent relationship to the Korean language but Tycoon, with his patience and precision, has encouraged me to build or rebuild a bridge to my heritage language. With Tycoon, I will get there eventually, one plank at a time.

When i first came to this app I wasn't sure about how I wanted to learn, but 선생님 helped me find a structure for our lessons that works for me. He is an amazing guide, very encouraging and patient. I always enjoy our lessons and look forward to each one :)
