JLPT N2 Level: Grammar & Expressions

Meaning: have no choice but to

Form: Verbない-form + ざるを得(え)ない
(する → せざるを得ない)

eg. 急(きゅう)な仕事(しごと)が入(はい)って、残業(ざんぎょう)せざるを得ませんでした。 I had no choice but to work overtime.

Meaning: cannot afford to / cannot possibly

Form: Dictionary form + わけにはいかない

eg. 明日(あした)試験(しけん)があるので、遊(あそ)ぶわけにはいきません。 I can’t afford to go out and play.

Meaning: although / even though

Form: Plain form + ものの

eg. 日本(にほん)に来(き)たものの、まだ生活(せいかつ)に慣(な)れていません。 Although I came to Japan, I’m not used to life here yet.

Meaning: not only... but also

Form: Noun / Plain form + ばかりか

eg. 彼(かれ)は日本語(にほんご)ばかりか、韓国語(かんこくご)も話(はな)せます。 He speaks not only Japanese but Korean too.

Meaning: might / could possibly (negative result)

Form: Verb stem + かねない

eg. そんな言(い)い方(かた)では、誤解(ごかい)されかねません。 You could be misunderstood if you say it that way.

Meaning: no more than / merely

Form: Plain form + にすぎない

eg. それは私(わたし)の意見(いけん)にすぎません。 That is only my opinion.

Meaning: from the fact that / because

Form: Plain form + ことから

eg. この町(まち)は城下町(じょうかまち)だったことから、古(ふる)い建物(たてもの)が多(おお)い。 Because this town used to be a castle town, there are many old buildings.

Meaning: there is a risk that...

Form: Plain form + おそれがある

eg. 台風(たいふう)で電車(でんしゃ)が止(と)まるおそれがあります。 There is a risk that trains may stop due to the typhoon.
