French B1 Vocabulary: Housing & Everyday Problems

Rent — The money paid regularly to live in a rented home. Example: Mon loyer a augmenté cette année.

Utilities / additional housing costs — Costs added to the rent, such as water, maintenance, or common-area expenses. Example: Les charges sont comprises dans le loyer.

Landlord / property owner — The person who owns the property you are renting. Example: Je dois contacter le propriétaire pour signaler le problème.

Tenant — A person who rents a house or apartment. Example: Le locataire doit respecter les règles de l'immeuble.

Neighbor — A person who lives near you, especially in the same building or neighborhood. Example: Ma voisine est très sympathique.

Neighborhood / surrounding residents — The people and area around where you live. Example: Le voisinage est généralement très calme.

Breakdown / malfunction — A situation where an electrical appliance or installation suddenly stops working. Example: Il y a une panne d'électricité dans l'immeuble.

Leak — A situation where water escapes from a pipe, roof, or other installation. Example: Il y a une fuite d'eau dans la salle de bains.

Repair — Work done to fix something that is damaged or not working properly. Example: La réparation de la chaudière coûte cher.

To repair / fix — To make something work properly again after it has been damaged or broken. Example: Le plombier va réparer le robinet demain.

To be broken / out of order — Used when a machine, appliance, or installation is not working. Example: La machine à laver est en panne.

To break down — Used when something suddenly stops working. Example: Mon réfrigérateur est tombé en panne hier soir.

Water damage — Damage caused by water leaking or flooding inside a building. Example: Nous avons eu un dégât des eaux dans la cuisine.

Power cut / power outage — A temporary interruption of electricity. Example: Il y a eu une coupure de courant pendant deux heures.

Heating — The system used to heat a home or building. Example: Le chauffage ne fonctionne plus depuis hier.

Air conditioning — A system used to cool the air inside a building. Example: Nous avons installé la climatisation dans la chambre.

To move house — To leave one home and move to another. Example: Je vais déménager le mois prochain.

Move / house move — The process of moving your belongings from one home to another. Example: Mon déménagement a été très fatigant.

Cardboard box — A box used to pack and transport belongings, especially when moving. Example: J'ai besoin de plusieurs cartons pour mes livres.

To move in — To start living in a new house or apartment. Example: Nous allons emménager dans notre nouvel appartement samedi.

Property inspection / inventory — An inspection of the condition of a rental property when moving in or out. Example: Nous avons fait l'état des lieux avant de récupérer les clés.

Security deposit — Money paid at the beginning of a rental agreement as protection against damage or unpaid costs. Example: J'ai dû payer un dépôt de garantie avant d'emménager.

Costs / expenses / fees — Money that must be paid for a service, procedure, or housing-related expense. Example: Les frais de déménagement étaient assez élevés.

To make noise — Used when someone produces sounds that disturb other people. Example: Mes voisins font beaucoup de bruit le soir.

To complain — To express dissatisfaction about a problem or situation. Example: Je vais me plaindre auprès du propriétaire à cause du bruit.
