The money you earn from your job.

Example: "What do you do for a living?" "I'm a mobile app designer."

The person in a family who earns the money that the family needs.

Example: Sue wasn't the family's only breadwinner, but she did earn the most.

Rich.

Example: Simon's mum and dad were both featured in the Financial Times's list of "100 Top UK CEOs", so his family must be loaded!

To spend a lot of money on things that are not necessary.

Examples:

I blew half of this month's pay on two new video games.

After winning the lottery, the couple decided to splash out on a round-the-world cruise.

To spend a lot of money in order to celebrate something.

Example: Mark really pushed the boat out for their first anniversary, surprising Clarise with a weekend getaway to Paris.

A very small amount of money.

Example: I know how much you enjoy it, but you shouldn't settle for a job that pays peanuts.

To have no money.

Example: I'm sorry, but we're broke. There's no way we can afford to go on holiday this year.

To have very little money.

Examples:

She's been hard up since she lost her job.

The high rents are really unfair on cash-strapped students.

I'd ask him to help, but I know he's strapped for cash this month.
