FAMOUS IDIOMS in Serbian - B2 level

Translation: Don’t go looking for a hair in an egg. Meaning: Don’t go out of your way to find fault in something.

Не тражи длаку у јајету. / Ne traži dlaku u jajetu.

Translation: …straightening winding Drinas. Meaning: Don’t bother trying to fix something that just can’t be fixed.

Исправљање кривих Дрина. / Ispravljanje krivih Drina.

Translation: You should not look a gift in the teeth. English equivalent: Never look a gift-horse in the mouth. Meaning: don’t weigh up the value of a gift – a gift is a gift and is to be accepted as such.

Поклону се у зубе не гледа. / Poklonu se u zube ne gleda.

Loosely translation into English is “It’s a win-win situation”.

Вук сит и (све) овце на броју. / Vuk sit i sve ovce na broju.

Translation: We talked of the wolf and he knocked on the door. Usage: If you are talking about somebody and just that minute they walk in on your conversation you might say this.

Ми о вуку а вук на врата. / Mi o vuku a vuk na vrata.

Translation: Until dusk falls for one man, dawn cannot come for another. Meaning: One man’s ill fortune is another’s good fortune.

Док једном не смркне другом не сване. / Dok jednom ne smrkne drugom ne svane.

Translation:  Better a sparrow in the hand than a falcon on the branch. English equivalent: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Боље врабац у руци, него соко на грани. / Bolje vrabac u ruci, nego soko na grani.

Translation: The early riser grabs good fortune twice! English equivalent: The early bird catches the worm.

Ко рано рани две среће граби. /  Ko rano rani dve sreće grabi.
