It depends on the context, it can be good, it means a cool and hard-working person, some synonyms are "chido(a)" or "chingón(a)". In other context means a bad person, a stupid.

It usually comes in the phrase "Hola raza" or "Qué onda raza" which can be translated as "What's up folks". We use it to adress or fellows at work, school, friends.

Literally in catholic religion it means godfather and godmother. But it can as well be a term you use for a really close friend.

Saying: "Between a rock and a hard place" but the direct translation is "between the sword and the wall"
