Poverty isn't a lack of character; it's a lack of cash (Rutger Bregman) [Part 2]
part 1: https://www.italki.com/entry/887185
So the main idea Rutger wants to share is that the poor are not dumb. They just live in the physical environment where they have so much to think about - where to find money for bills, how to pay for kids's education and which supermarket offers today more discounts on groceries. We don't have to teach the poor how to live, how to manage their money and how to plan their budget. When it comes down to poverty, the rich people should stop pretending they know best. We just have to change the contex in which the destitute live. According to economists' best estimates, for a net cost of 175 billion — a quarter of US military spending, one percent of GDP — we could lift all impoverished Americans above the poverty line. We could actually eradicate poverty. Now, that should be our goal.
