A contracted sound
拗音
A youon (palatalised sound) is created by combining two syllables, such as ki and ya (kya), ki and yu (kyu), and ki and yo (kyo).
「きゃ」「きゅ」「きょ」などの2文字で表記した音韻は、拗音と言います。
The rule is that the syllables that follow appear as small letters from the "ya" column of the syllabary: "ya", "yu", and "yo".
後ろの文字は、ヤ行拗音「ゃ」「ゅ」「ょ」の小さい文字が付くのが決まりです。
Nowadays, it is only recognized in dialects, but there is also a "wa" column of the syllabary, which is used for "kwa" and "gwa".
現在では、方言に認められるだけですが、「くゎ」「ぐゎ」のワ行拗音「ゎ」もあります。
These combinations include two syllables, but the sound is only one syllable (one clap).
2文字ですが、一音節(1拍)です。
The syllables from the ya column can follow syllables called "inodan". The 11 "inodan" syllables are as follows:
"ki", "gi", "shi", "ji", "chi", "ni", "hi", "bi", "pi", "mi" and "ri".
ヤ行拗音は、「いの段」と呼ばれる文字の後ろにつきます。下記の11文字が、「いの段」です。
「き」「ぎ」「し」「じ」「ち」「に」「ひ」「び」「ぴ」「み」「り」
*A did change the wording a bit from the Japanese in places to help make the meaning more clear.
