Hello, why should we use the past in this sentence: Vincent was a careless driver before he HAD his accident. I’d say so: Vincent was a careless driver before he HAD had his accident. Thanks! :)

Past perfect (had had) places that action first in time. This would mean that 'have an accident' occurred before 'be a careless driver'. That is false. He was a careless driver first. He had his accident second.
