Before Mount Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain on Earth?

Everest isn't the highest It's K2 I believe, and not being discovered had nothing to do with it being the highest or not

You got me on that one, Jon. How could people not notice Mt. Everest sticking out there as big as life? Good question though. And the answer is???

Aconcagua. Everest (and the Himalayas) was formed by the collision and subduction of the Indian and Eurasian plates, about 60 million years ago. The Andes, by comparison, existed as far back as Pangea in the middle to late Mesozoic. So at least 100 million years earlier. It did not reach its peak height until about 12 million years ago, though.
