Hi everyone, Who do people add a pronoun in their names or job titles on their work or LinkedIn profiles in the U.S.? Why is it so important to add a pronoun? What information do they want to share with others when they show a pronoun in their names? Thank you. Ex: James (He/they)

They want to show in which form they want to be addressed / the gender they identify as: she/her = female he/his = male they/ them = neither male or female / non-binary

Some people think it’s important to add a pronoun, while others do not. This issue divides Americans. One reason for adding a pronoun is to make your gender clear when interacting with international audiences, who may not recognize the gender of your name. Others add their pronouns because they identify in a way that their name does not reflect, because their name is frequently used for both traditional genders (i.e., Sam, Alex, Chris), or because they want to express support for others who identify in less traditional ways. Other people don’t add pronouns because they don’t believe they provide any useful or new information. Yet others struggle with new gender identities and want to express their disagreement with this movement. Many others simply don’t care either way. In sum, pronouns are a controversial topic. Americans do not agree on whether pronouns are necessary or not. Some think they’re very important, while others think they’re unnecessary or even morally wrong. I hope that makes sense. I tried to write my answer in the most objective and balanced way possible. 😊
