I might add (just to make matters more complicated) that the meaning of "contest" where it's a synonym of "competition" is pronounced "CONtest"; if you pronounce it "conTEST" then it's a verb, meaning to compete.

because there are different priorities
contest:a person's skills can be displayed without reservation
competition:competition for skills and knowledge
