I'm learning time in Chinese and had to translate a couple of sentences. In my lesson 钟 was introduced, so I used it for the following sentences: 我想十八点钟去银行。 银行几点钟开门? 我们十点钟吃牛肉, 好吗? 你想几点钟去咖啡馆? 咖啡馆二十二点钟开门。 But in the key to the exercises the 钟 was omitted in all of them. Is it still okay to use this word or is it a mistake? Is there a general rule, when to use 钟? 谢谢

I'm learning time in Chinese and had to translate a couple of sentences. In my lesson 钟 was introduced, so I used it for the following sentences: 我想下午六点钟去银行。 银行几点钟开门? 我们十点钟吃牛肉, 好吗? 你想几点钟去咖啡馆? 咖啡馆晚上十点钟开门。 But in the key to the exercises the 钟 was omitted in all of them. Is it still okay to use this word or is it a mistake? Is there a general rule, when to use 钟? 谢谢
1.In Chinese writing or communicating,we usually use 早上/下午/晚上/凌晨+ 0-12点,instead of 13点-24点。 2.“钟” can be used after time, just like your example sentences.m, 10点钟/几点钟,10点/几点,both are correct, different ways to express the same thing.

We don’t use 24-hour system in oral or written Chinese, usually we will insert 上午、下午 or 晚上 before the exactly time, say, 下午六点(十八点钟),晚上十点钟开门(二十二点钟开门) Also, when we talk about time, it’s all right to use 钟 or not following 点,cause we all know that 点 means time, what’s more, 钟 is also a noun, means clock

我想十八点钟去银行。 银行几点钟开门? 我们十点钟吃牛肉, 好吗? 你想几点钟去咖啡馆? 咖啡馆二十二点钟开门。 上面五个句子都是表示时间点,所以不需要用”钟“The top five sentences are time points and so no need use "钟" “分钟”和“分”都可以应用在时间长度上,但“分钟”描述时间更加规范,意思明确。 比如: 15分钟=15分 They both can be applied in length of time, but "分钟" describes time as more standardized and with clear meaning. 主要区别是:“分钟”仅仅表示时间长度,而“分”不仅可以表示时间长度,还可以表示时间位置。 The main difference is that "分钟" only represents the length of time, while "分" represents not only the length of time, but also the time position. 比如: 1)我等了你15分钟了 (15分钟是一段时间) 不可以说:我等了你15分 2)现在是1点15分 (15分是时间点) 我们不说:现在是1点15分钟

I suppose that it's always appropriate to omit this word when trying to mention the time. Actually, the sentence sounds more natural without it and no counterexample has occurred to me yet. example: 请问现在几点了? 现在下午四点了(=十六点)。 哦天哪,银行五点就要关门,我得赶快过去。 If the character “钟”is added in the conversation above, it will be a little bit verbose.
