There are coffee beans (whole ones) or instant coffee, the powdered kind that dissolves. Hope this helps :)

I use the phrase "bean coffee." There's another pair of choices, though. "Ground coffee" versus "instant coffee." Instant coffee is a soluble powder; you mix it in very hot water and it dissolves completely. It's not as good as ground coffee. "Ground coffee" is roasted, ground coffee beans. It does not dissolve in water. There are different systems for making it. Some of them involve the use of a paper filter. The ground coffee is put in a filter. Almost-boiling water is added. The water extracts the coffee. The liquid coffee goes through the filter leaving wet "grounds" behind. To make instant coffee, all you need is something to boil water in. You make the coffee right in the cup. To make ground coffee, you need some kind of "coffeemaker"--"pour-over," "French press," "automatic drip," "Keurig." To make bean coffee, you need everything you need for ground coffee plus a coffee grinder.
