Hey there, what’s the difference between ARREARS and DEBT? Do these sentences mean exactly the same? He ran into difficulties with his mortgage, building up more than 10 000€ arrears. He ran into difficulties with his mortgage, building up more than 10 000€ debts.

Not the same syntax. We usually say “in arrears” meaning “behind” in payments. If he should pay $100 per month on a debt of $10,000 but he missed paying 3 months, then he is $300 in arrears on a $10,000 debt.
