Hi what is the difference: 1) that would be a shame. 2) that would be a pity. What is appropriate occasion to use them?

In those phrases, shame and pity have exactly the same meaning.

Both the same really. I failed my exam. That's a shame/pity.

Pity means: the feeling of sorrow and compassion caused by the suffering and misfortunes of others. Shame means: a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior
