Can you help me to improve this old saying, please? "People of the servile rank are real curs sometimes. The harder the punishment, the dearer the masters are to them." PS Lackeys are of the servile rank, for example. Curs are particular dogs. Also cur is a contemptible man (derogative, informal).

Sycophant plebs are a peculiar lot: the harsher the punishment, the greater their devotion to their masters. I changed it a bit just so you have a different variant. Hope it helps.

The word 'cur' is a great one (suitably archaic-sounding). How about the 'lower orders' for 'people of the servile rank'? "The lower orders can be absolute curs. The harder they are whipped, the dearer are their masters to them."
