Hello, the first sentence of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” says, “Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much”. What is the exact function of “thank you very much” here? I can hear it in some interviews as well, I seem to get the gist, but I’d appreciate it if someone provided their insight. Thank you very much!

In this context, "thank you very much" is a mildly sarcastic reply to those who might consider them to not be normal.

It means they are very happy with that situation and do not want any other way of being.
