Of the wide range of birthday presents, a paper book unpretentiously stands apart. Not the most common option, it would still have a true book buff over the moon. Since my brother is insanely passionate of fiction, I have decided to present him with "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" by Random Riggs.
The book follows the adventures of a teenage boy Jacob Portman with a group of peculiar children. Avoiding delving deeply into the author's terminology, "peculiardom" means unusual capabilities, such as flying, control over the four elements, super power and so on. The antagonists are presented as lunatic experimenters, aimed at getting ymbrynes kidnapped and gathered together. To cut a long story short, an ymbryne is a woman possessing a startling ability to travel through the time and turn into a bird by addition.
In order to give this review comprehensive and detailed, it would be an appropriate idea to bring up the pros and cons of the book. What is one of its specific features is the third-person narration, that is comparatively rare in the fiction genre. The fact that the narration is strictly limited by the protagonist's field of view evokes a sort of intrigue, turning the story into a gripping cliffhanger. On the other hand, the narration is not overwhelmed by twists in the tale, which prevents the reader from feeling foolish and incapable of predicting plain plot twists.
Moving on to the disadvantages, I consider it important to mention scarce thoroughness of the anti-heroes. Even though their plans and ideas are clearly described, their characters and behavior still might seem somewhat two-dimensional.
Getting down to my personal general opinion of the whole work, the book is a captivating page-turner that is definitely worth being given as a birthday present. One more impressive circumstance to be cheerful about is the existence of the well made film adaptation, which is one more argument for this book.
