It is a beautiful city, but it is even more renowned for the great works of art that can be seen in its museums. Most of the most famous artists of all time lived and worked in Florence. Among them were Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Florence is in north central Italy. It was built along both sides of the Arno River, and the two banks of the river are connected by several bridges. Florence is a very big city with a large population, but it does not have as many factories as other cities of that size. Many people make their living by taking care of the many tourists who visit the city every year. Despite the fact that some of the buildings of Florence were destroyed by the Germans in world war II, and some works of art were carried away, most of the people of the city were hidden in the hills until after the war.
