It's a fair question, and there's a lot more to the answer than I can usually provide in a short essay. What is cultural identity? Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. Various conditions will be of importance to build our cultural identity, including: location, gender, race, history, nationality, language, sexuality, religious beliefs, ethnicity, aesthetics, and even food. How does language affect culture identity? Language is a crucial factor in the composition of culture, and embodiment of culture. We learn languages from a baby to an old man. Language is a way to communicate with the world, learn about culture and strengthen our culture identity. Foreign language seem to be as much a risk as an asset for Children in reducing cultural identity. On the one hand, learning different culture enhances their cultural identity in their own countries. However, It is worth considering the materials in foreign languages plays a crucial role in building their cultural identity. They will be affected by the positive or negative opinions from foreign materials, since the children don't have their world view. If they read a lot of material about foreign countries on the good side, then they will indulge in the romantic imagination of foreign countries. If parents and teachers, society don't encourage our offsprings to study our excellent culture and enhance their identity and self-confidence in our own culture, which causes their identities in culture and nation to be split. How do we help our kids build their culture identity? Only with the proper guidance of parents and teachers can children develop critical thinking from different language materials. With the help of critical thinking, they can have a due estimate of our culture and others, but also make your cultural identity clear. As Federico Fellini said- A different language is different vision of life, we can have other ways to think about the world by studying other languages.
