One of the
most well-known examples of the problematic nature of English spelling is the
fact the word fish could reasonably be spelt <ghoti>. This works because
the <f> of fish sounds the same as the <gh> in cough, the <i>
is the same as the <o> in women, and the <sh> is the same as the
<ti> in motion.
It's a mess, isn't it?
