Homesickness, in fact, can happen to anyone. It has nothing to do with how independent you are, how old you are, if you speak your new language fluently, how far away from home you’ll be or how prepared you are for being an exchange student.

In my experience the "small things" can count as much as the absence of family and friends. The weather, the food, the colour of the sky and the trees, the sports you'd practice at home, the change of life patterns and rhythms, etc...

No way would I ever host an exchange student again. We got this girl from Austria who was into the occult. Long story short, she was out of my home by Halloween, not even making it six months, the time we originally has planned for her to stay. Creepy kid, creepy experience, never again.
