我自学的第一个外语是英文。我记得当时我好像还在上小学六年级。说起来挺好笑的，我小学的时候特别讨厌英文。主要是没有动力，不明白学来要干嘛，毕竟平时也用不上，学校考试也就是随便应付，能过关就行。后来有一天偶然在电视上看到 High School Musical 的预告片 (no seriously, don't laugh, haha)，不知道为什么，就觉得特别酷，莫名地想看，刚好当晚Disney Channel首播，就这样守在电视机前看了我人生第一部英文电影。 因为英文水平太低，可以说是完全没听懂（整部电影里能听懂的对白估计不到十句），就这样看着演员的表情和动作从头猜到尾。。。And I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I found everything in that movie fascinating - cheerleading teams, pep rallies, musicals, kids showing up to school in their own clothes (we had to wear uniforms), lockers (you could leave your stuff in metal cabinets at school???)... It was so different from what I was used to - and I thought, wow, I really want to get to know that foreign culture. And if I wanted to do that, I had to learn their language, right? Suddenly English didn't seem so pointless anymore. And for me, that's the purpose of learning foreign languages - so I can communicate with people from other cultures, learn their history, read their books, watch their movies and shows, listen to their music and maybe learn to see things from their perspectives. I'm now trying to do the same with other languages and I think this will always be my main motivation for language learning.
