Anyway, I'm still a learner. And I'm not trying to lecture you on how to learn English.  I just want to provide you some suggestion I think are very useful. :)

Corrections:*... and then look them up... *...forty unfamiliar words... *I do not mean a real essay.

To truly understand the fourty unfamiliar words, I will   

have to spent about 2 hours and 30 minutes, sometimes 3 hours.  Besides my paper dictionary, I also use online dictionary or ask on Italki if I still cannot understand what a word really mean.  I'll also write at least an essay every week.  I do not a real essay.  It can be anything- a poem, a letter or anything else.  And I also listen to English songs, watch English movies and etc..  Well, if I've more time, I'll certainly do more than these.  :)           

Since I've to work from 9 in the morning till 6 in the evening, I can't study like a language student. However, I manage to find the time for study.

I'll read for one hour and thirty minutes everyday or just one hour if I've to work at night.  In the process, I'll identify 40 unfamiliar words and look them up in my monolingual dictionary (using a monolingual dictionary is important as it makes you think in your target language and gives you the chance to be familiar with the most basic vocabulary and grammar).
