Well, if you want to very fluent, you should practice everything from reading, to listening, to writing, to speaking. You have to work on a little bit of everything. 

It depends on what you're going to do with your language for what you should focus on first. If you're going to a country of the language you're learning, you should definitely focus on listening and speaking! Maybe reading as well since there can be some signs and other things that may not have an English, or your native language, translation. :D

Also, use the language you're learning! Write journal entries on here to be corrected by native speakers and find people to talk to over Skype, and so on. ^__^

pee + Eskimo = /pies/kimo in speech. Just the polish equivalent and the target word.
That's why I love them. And the best thing about them is that they are so personal. And in my opinion, the individualism is what the learning process should be about, because we are soo different in our likings and hobbies... And BTW I have just finished my diploma projest about using music in teaching grammar to teenagers, so I've scanned tons of books about learning ;)

I personally find it hard to listen to the language I've just started to learn, before having any glimpse on how the spelling goes, what are the rules of pronounciation. I just like to have it all described. Then I can listen to the rhythm and the beauty of the language. Listening and reading simultaneously is great technique to start with a language in my opinion. And getting to the real texts as quickly as possible. When you can read about things you really like, learning a languiage is soo rewarding ;) and, as far as grammar is concerned, too much of it drives me nuts! I just skim through the grammar description at first. I like to discover grammar, but I think this is very personal.

But there is one thing which I find essential in learning - mnemotechniques. You can use it or not, but if you don't like it, it's just a signal that you do it wrong... Because when you try to memorise letters that by themselves do not carry any meaning it is almost pointless. Let's take a word "dog". In german it's "hund", in polish it's "pies", but those four letters have no meaning-transfer capacity if you aks me. But the sight of your favourite breed of a dog, its smell and all those other factors, all five senses' informations they give you does have got tremendous meaning to you, I bet. Let me give an example- let's take polish "pies":

i think for me, firstly you should have the basic of language , after the best method is listen lot of podcast whose they speak about differents topics........the same time you have to practice and practice with native speaker or someone who speak fluent.....
