I'm learning kanji and they are a lot of kanji that have the same or different meaning as other kanji. I would like to know when to use one kanji or word over another?
林(はやし)= woods, forest
森(もり)= woods, forest
森林(しんりん) = woods, forest
“林” emphasizes the plants or trees in the area, while “森” underlines the density of the trees or plants in the area. Therefore,“森林” as a combination of “森” and “林” refers to a forest. As kanji originates from China, you can also read some ancient Chinese books such as 《诗》、《书》、《礼》、《易》、《乐了》、《春秋》if you want to know more about Kanji or 汉字(Hanzi )in Chinese.
