It means something was understood. So on italki if I understand your correction I’ll say “that makes sense”. That’s the most basic usage. You can also say it if someone brings up a good point in an argument and you want to acknowledge that. An example of this usage in argument:
P1: I don’t think phones are good for your health.
P2: but I use my phone to talk to my friends, and that’s good for my mental health.
P1: that makes sense, but they can still harm your productivity.
Person 1 doesn’t agree with P2, but he thinks that p2 has made a good point. It doesn’t have to be used in argument either- I use it too when someone’s explaining a situation and I need a generic response just to show I understand.
P1: I’m feeling really bad today.
P2: I’m sorry, why is that?
P1: my brother said something very mean to me.
P2: but I thought your brother lived in another state?
P1: we were talking on the phone.
P2: ohh that makes sense.
That’s how I think I’ve seen it used.
