I think it's one of the critical tasks to learn academic knowledge for the student, but I'm not sure it is the top priority. Of course, theoretical knowledge must be necessary, and it would help them when they do something to begin. I think the task for students depends on how they feel about the diversity in society. Thus, another critical point that they should learn is to gain communication skills. Because if they can't explain your thoughts well, they might lose the opportunity that discovers something new.
I understand people have different suitabilities. So someone good at gaining academic knowledge, others feel comfortable in extrovert situations. In my opinion, the first essential thing for students is to understand themselves and find what they want to do. When they can catch that, they will do well in everything actively.
