'usted' is used to respect elder people or people in a higher position or rank.
It is just a respectful formal way to address people.
You use 'tu' to address peers, friends and next to kin.
Your boss, professor, an older person would be addressed using 'usted',while your friend, your spouse ,your son etc..will be addressed using 'tu'.
" Tú te llamas Andreza" (When someone your age speaks to you ).
" Me gustaría hablar con usted " (when someone talks to their professor or any person older in age or higher in rank."
