When you do magic, you cast spells. Spell is the name of the specific action (i.e. spell of charm) and magic is more global.

"Magic" is a metaparadigm. "Spell" is a specific application of "magic". "Cookery" is a metaparadigm. A "recipe" is a specific application of "cookery".
