sergey.alexandrov, Very high tech information: A male part of something is the part that fits inside of another part. A female part is the the part that another part fits into. A M/F hose swivel would be male on one end and female on the other end.

Excellent question. I teach in English in engineering. None of us would have a clue, but male/female makes perfect sense.
