appoint may give a person an official title. The person has been chosen by any means - voting or chosen by a small group or chosen by one leader. Designate - not used for a person as often it is for a thing or place. - This area is designated (set aside) for smoking. This car is designated for work only. Nominate- chosen by a person or group to be put forth as a candidate for an official appointment.
