Is or was? The boat hit a rock and sank quickly. Fortunately everybody is/was rescued. What should be used in the sentence, is or was and why?

'Was rescued' because the first sentence is in the past so the next sentence has to be in the past too!

as the sentence is in past simple, you should use was :)) The boat hit a rock and sank quickly. Fortunately everybody was rescued.

"was" - past tense The first sentence was in the past tense so the following sentence, which relates to the first sentence, has to be in the same tense.
