What is the 'close second' means?
I heard a word 'close second'.
Is it means 'a thing close to first' or 'a thing close to second'?

If something is a close second, it means it was very close to first place, but still in second place.
If one swimmer is 0.01 seconds behind the winner in a race, we would say he is a close second.
