What does " on one's own steam" mean? I saw this sentence in a novel. I looked it up in the dictionary but there is no such a phrase. The full sentence in the novel is "I went outside on my own steam and walked to my car." Thanks for the help.

It's a very weird, poetic phrase, that's for sure. I'd rephrase it as "without anyone else's help".
