Most people can't learn Korean quickly. I agree with chin.billy.leung that it takes more than a year to start understanding simple things on TV. The best way to learn it is to listen A LOT to simple things. Go to Junior Naver or Kids Daum online and play games and listen to stories designed for Korean children. They have some for little kids 3-7 years old. Some of the games are fun and they will teach you vocab and show you how to read, how to count, etc. You can hear easy Korean. Read and listen to children's books on that site--some of them have simple words and the pictures can help you understand. You can read old Korean fairy tales and learn about the culture that way. Or you can read and listen to stories you already know, like Pinocchio or Cinderella, and it makes it easier to understand the Korean. Watch Korean cartoons on YouTube. Listen to music. Pororo and Tayo are fun to watch (타요 & 뽀로로). Listen to music and read the lyrics. Read manhwa online. You have to find FUN things to do so you'll stay motivated to keep learning. At first reading seems hard and slow and discouraging, but it gets easier and easier and pretty soon it feels natural. Good luck.

Forget to say. If you try to understand news, it will take you even longer time because news usually requires an audience who knows a good vocabulary level. The only good thing is that you won't have to bother with slangs and accent in news because anchor people usually have to articulate very well to be put on the job. Movies will typically take you a long long time because movies have a great variety of slangs and also require that you have a pretty good level of vocabulary. I think I'd say if you pass the movie test then you are top notch in korean. That will be your ultimate goal.

well, it is taking me 4 years to be able to sit before the TV and roughly understand a drama show and I am studying very hard at it. No matter how much you study there would always be words that you won't understand. But I say if you keep listening at it for 1-2 years you should be getting a good feel of what the topic is on.
