How to describe putting a piece of clothes in front you to roughly see if it fits?
When visiting a clothes store ,if you just lay a piece of clothing in front of you rather than trying it on to see if it fits,is there a brief way to describe it?

Most people would say: "Hold it up to you to see if it looks like it would fit." Hold it up is the phrase you are looking for.
