Cuántos and Cuántas are used with countable nouns. Countable nouns refer to items which can be counted like books, cars, bottles, friends...
¿Cuántos libros de matemáticas tienes? tengo cinco libros.
¿Cuántas primas tienes? tengo tres primas.
