A play is a story told through dialogue. It can be a comedy (comedic play) or a tragedy (tragic play). Comedy can also be used to describe other entertainment.

A "Play" is the production itself. It is usually put on in a theatre and can be drama or comedy. A Comedy is meant to be funny - you can have a comedy play. So, Macbeth is a play, but not a comedy.
