Meaning of 'Je suis du midi' At the moment I am reading Germinal in English and French. The French says: Je suis du midi The English translation is: I am from the south However midi means afternoon. So how does it translate as I am from the south?

"Le Midi" (capital "M") is the southern half of France. It is called that way because at noon ("midi", lower-case "m") the sun is toward the south.
