In scientific writing, the abbreviation for the units is always in the singular.
For example : 5 min, 12 cm, 7 kg, 9 kW ...
I would do the same in everyday writing too.

i think both can be used , this is spoken by people anyway
i can say a five minutes break
or
i took a five minute break
